The board of the Harrold Independent School District, having received credible threats from Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold from beyond the grave, decided that teachers working in the 150-student school system may now come to class packing heat. Yes. Concealed, loaded guns. With which to shoot students.
My favorite part of the Reuters report — which, by the way, you can read here — is the maniacal, ranting explanation provided by David Thweatt, the district superintendent. Mind you, district superintendents usually have Ph.Ds.
We have a lock-down situation, we have cameras, but the question we had to answer is, “What if somebody gets in? What are we going to do?” It’s just common sense.
I humbly submit, David, that arming teachers against hyper-exaggerated threats and thereby creating paranoia, mistrust, a hostile climate and the potential for really hideous accidents are not what pass in most of the country as common sense.
